Cisco Takes Intent-Based Networking to the IoT Edge
Cisco Systems unveiled an expansion of its new-age networking solution, with one of the new areas of reach being the edge of the burgeoning Internet of Things (IoT).
Cisco's Intent-Based Networking (IBN) was born out of the Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) initiative that the company initially offered in response to the upstart software-centric movement headed by technology approaches such as software-defined networking (SDN).
"IBN simplifies network deployment and management by automating key IT functions and providing centralized visibility and control over everything from network performance to security, analytics and operations," explained Vikas Butaney in a blog post this week (Jan. 29).
The networking giant announced it's taking IBN to the IoT edge at a Barcelona conference in which it unveiled a larger umbrella project it calls ACI Anywhere.
"It delivers operational simplicity, application agility and protection in the data center -- all delivered in a uniquely open approach that integrates with all hypervisors and container frameworks on which applications are deployed," the company said. "With ACI Anywhere, that journey extends ACI to any workload, any location, any cloud. Virtual ACI already supports bare metal clouds and remote edge locations. And now with the new Cloud ACI capabilities, Cisco extends automation, management, and security to AWS and Microsoft Azure by fully integrating with their Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) environments."
Along with that announcement, Cisco introduced new IoT networking products, tools for developers, validated design guides and partner specializations to provides scalability, flexibility and security for IoT environments.
The new products include new Catalyst industrial switches and industrial Integrated Services routers purpose-built for IoT environments.
Developer tools are provided in the company's DevNet developer program, and a new IoT Developer Center includes learning materials, developer tools and support resources.
